Dev
Anand's Censor is self-explanatory. He takes on the censors in
this film. Vikramjeet (Dev Anand) is a well-known director. His new
film Aanewala Pal featuring newcomers, gets into a controversy
with the Censor Board - a five-jury member headed by Rekha. They want
13 cuts in the film, but Dev Anand argues and tells the Board to give
up their 'prudery' and keep pace with the times; nudity no longer
shocks in this satellite age.
But three of the
members - Amrish Puri, Jackie Shroff and Mamta Kulkarni - strongly
oppose the film. They feel that the film propagates vulgarity. As the
film traces Vikramjeet's struggle to get his film cleared, a lot of
other skeletons get exposed. For one, Amrish Puri's and Jackie
Shroff's double standards.
They
themselves lead a life of duplicity with their wives, and cheat on
them. Jackie Shroff and Mamta Kulkarni have an axe to grind with
Vikramjeet. They were both rejected at one point of their lives by the
director. Jackie being a writer was quite keen on working with the
director, but failed to get through, while Mamta wanted to act in the
director's film but got rejected.
The
film passes from court to court. In the meantime, an NRI director (Archana
Puran Singh) gets interested in Vikramjeet's film and helps him show
his film abroad. The film wins the Academy award. And as luck would
have it, the court in India decides to pass the film without any cuts
and gives it a U certificate. The director has the last laugh. And so
does the audience.
