When coming to live in Jakarta for the first time most expatriates are concerned to know what health care facilities are available in the city in case of illness. There are some increased risks of disease associated with living in a developing tropical country, however if you take sensible precautions, use common sense and take personal responsibility for your health and that of your family you should stay healthy.

On 11th August Muslims in Indonesia and throughout the world started their annual fast that takes place during the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. 
As I sit here on the island of Java on this Independence Day eve, I have realized that I treasure my nationality more now than before. It's funny how when I was back home in Malaysia, I never felt much patriotism toward the land from which I came, but being miles away for it, grows a deep longing for its sounds, sights and scents that now, more than ever, means so much to me!

A Bit of History: Brinjal is considered to originate from India where it grew wild. It was introduced into Europe during the middle Ages and by the 18th century, both the French and the Italians cultivated eggplant, which they then called aubergine. Other names for brinjal are melongene or eggplant. Thomas Jefferson, who happened to be an experimental botanist, introduced brinjal to the United States in 1806.

Leeches! Yes that was a black little worm stuck on my shin. I almost jumped out of my skin. There was no salt at hand while trekking in the protected forest up at Gunung Gede-Pangrango, to put over the leech.
