Caution: May Contain Traces of Nuts!

A deliciously witty and delightful personality descended extremely hard and rocking on a bunch of unsuspecting audiences; leaving behind a chaos of unprecedented laughter and ruin of moral etiquette. Presenting Kumar! That wicked, flirtatious, gorgeous, cheerful soul!

Some guffawed boisterously, whilst some lamented on the decay of moral values. There were those who whistled and howled with pleasure and those who just dug deep into their plates pretending that they were not there. Ostriches aside, that's Kumar for you. Either you love him or you hate him, but can you ignore him? He is a feast or a fast for both the eyes and the ears, depending on how your senses perceive him. Wait, shall we back up the bandwagon for a moment and start from the very beginning?

A few weeks back, a half asleep me logged on to Facebook and found an event invitation: Asia's No.1 Stand-Up Comedian. What? I said to myself and jolted out of my daze - Kumar in Jakarta! Who do I call? I cannot miss this for the world.

You know, I do not like people who stop and ask me trivial questions like 'when was it', 'where was it', etc, especially when I am already mourning the fact that it was over too soon and left me craving for more. Anyhow for those who missed it, it was on 31 January at Hard Rock Cafe. Tickets were printed and distributed at the eleventh hour and they even got my name spelt wrongly on the invitations and table place card. Rosemarie John was freakishly spelt Roselerie Jhon! But hey, who bothers because by the time the show ended, I seriously forgot how to spell my name also!

Kumar has performed in corporate parties in Indonesia before but never was a show organized as an event of its own. If you don’t know who Kumar is before continuing this read, go to you tube and type 'Kumar comedy Singapore' in the search box. For those who are physically and mentally below eighteen. Go to you tube and type Kung Fu Panda instead. His shows are mostly restricted to adults due to its explicit content, hence parental advisory is key.

Kumar's story is an interesting one... Anything that is new in art and culture in Asia, contrary to what most people think is often grudgingly accepted after a lot of stiff opposition from home and society at large. An artiste’s first critic is often the blackmailing mom or dad, whose first reaction to the creative genius of a child would be, 'Aiya! What will people say?'

I will bet my last Dollar when I say this. Imagine a scene back when Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal; Do you think that people at that time would have said 'Wow! What a marvel?' They must have said 'What a waste of marble!' My point is... What happens when a guy goes prancing about in woman's clothes? Scandals! Gossips! Dad would cry shame; mom would look for the balcony to jump off; siblings would threaten dire consequences; friends would think you’re crazy and neighbours would chinwag.

A weaker human with such aspirations would wither and die but not Kumar. This wonderful brave human took his art on a stage and made believers out of disbelievers that even an outcast of the society can carve a niche and make his craft a part of local folklore. So you see why I went all gaga about him and his performance?

Speaking of gaga, at least Kumar puts himself out there as a drag queen. Unlike Lady Gaga who tries to look like one when everybody knows she's all womanly under those frocks! If that is even what you can call her latest look designed by Armani at the Grammy's. If there is a God and if God has a plan, could he have crafted a more regal source of sass, satire and truth-telling than the glamorous star that emerges when a dude tucks in his junk, dons a wig and a dress, artfully applies makeup and adopts a heightened feminine persona?
