Different
Strokes of India

'Different Strokes of India' is a
group of artistically inclined India expatriate residents of Jakarta.
Perhaps such a group is just a natural consequence of the rich
overspill of India culture and tradition within every Indian. While
some members are pro, some are exhibiting for the first time. The love
of our country and its people and cultures is depicted exuberantly in
'Rang Barse I', the first art exhibition put up by 'Different Strokes
of India'.

A graduate of fine arts from Sir J. J. School of Arts, Nirupama has
worked as free-lance artist designing murals, art work for publicity
and painting mostly in abstract style. "Living in a cultural explosion
all the time is perhaps what makes the people of Indonesia so
passionate and dramatic and one cannot but express your feelings in
one medium or another", she says. She had her last exhibition at World
Trade Center, Jakarta in August 1997, on the eve of the 50th
anniversary of India's Independence. She is working for Jakarta
International School since 1981 and says "Bali and my students are
constant sources of inspiration to me".
PARTHIV VARDARAJAN
Parthiv is a senior at the Jakarta International School. Artistically
inclined from childhood, he enjoys drawing and playing music
(keyboard, guitar). Having been blessed with a keen sense of form and
shape, he started off early with penciling cartoon characters. He has
gradually moved on to mature subjects and is fascinated with portraits
of people emoting in different ways. Parthiv has not had formal
training in painting and his work should be seen as occasional
attempts at capturing visuals which impress him deeply. Creating
portraits with a few deft, uncomplicated movements seems to come to
him easily and this is what he has attempted to do here.
Parthiv has participated in competitions and won a few awards along
the way.

1996 and now designs for Fusionns, her East meets West boutique in
Saberro House. She believes 'Being creative produces happiness
hormones' and 'Rang Barse I' is her second painting exhibition in
