Discovering Reiki

People come to Reiki through many different ways and through many different routes. Some discover the power of Reiki through receiving treatment from a professional Reiki therapist, others may be given healing by a friend who has learned Reiki. Some experience it for the first time while attending a course to learn the techniques for themselves.
You can receive Reiki treatments without having to learn any techniques. However, many people progress to learning from a master. This enables them to practice Reiki on themselves and on others. Some may eventually work toward becoming a Reiki master, although it requires a long time commitment.

At a time of need
You may have heard about Reiki some time before you actually decide to have a treatment or to undertake a course of training to become a practitioner. On the other hand, you may have a treatment and decide there and then that this is the therapy for you. It is often said by practitioners that Reiki appears in your life when you are in greatest need of it, or that it finds you just when your potential for healing has reached its highest level. Reiki can benefit everyone, and, because it does not involve any manipulation of the body, it is perfectly safe for the elderly, and for babies and young children. Reiki is also suitable for ill people, which other therapies may not be.

Making a Commitment
The simplicity of Reiki is the accessibility of Reiki that everyone, no matter who they are, what they do or their state of health, can receive it, learn it, and practice it. Reiki is not an academic subject to learn, and you do not need any special equipment in order to give the healing. All you need is a sincere commitment to help yourself to progress and develop and thus be able to help others.
When first learned, the Reiki techniques are primarily used for self- healing or helping friends and family. Many people use them to help facilitate change or to open up a new way of living. Reiki is said to work on a level of trust. You can have no specific expectations of the healing, for healing is not necessarily curing. Rather, it is about restoring a sense of wholeness and harmony. Many Reiki adherents say that Reiki has its own wisdom and that it can be empowering even when physical healing is not possible.

For everyone
Reiki is not a religion and can therefore be practiced by people of different faiths. Unlike some forms of healing , it has no specific religious dogma associated with it. Instead Reiki is about encouraging people to have trust in themselves and in the universe.

Simply Healing
Although Reiki is hands-on form of healing, no manipulation of the body is involved, as it is in therapies such as osteopathy, chiropractic, kinesiology, rolfing, massage, shiatsu, and reflexology. There is, therefore, no risk of injury, aches, pains occurring after a reiki treatment, as there can be with some other therapies. Reiki is suitable for the ill and disabled which osteopathy and yoga for example, may not be.
No substances are involved in the practice of Reiki, as they are in homeopathy, herbalism, aromatherapy etc. It can be used in conjunction with other complementary therapies and healing forms, and with other orthodox medical treatments.
