Meditation may aid in brain function
According to three different studies released
meditation may change the brain in a way that helps boost
attention. This lends credence to claims, by Buddhist monks that
sitting quietly and focusing on breathing or an image helps
increase attention and concentration

Harvard Medical School looked at brain
parts involved in memory and attention in subjects who meditated
but didn't believe in Buddhism.
- Meditators had increased thickness in those
regions of the brain
- Those areas shrink as people get older, but
this study found that older meditators were able to ward off
some of that shrinkage due to meditation.
The University of Wisconsin conducted a
study mostly of Buddhist monks
Meditation produced jump in brain waves associated with
vigilance and activated brain regions involved in attention
A University of Kentucky research found that meditation
boosts performance in tests that measure attention.
- People taught to meditate did better on
the tests compared with their performance after their own
preparations.
- Meditation improved performance after
subjects had lost a night's sleep.
