Mr. S.K. Biswas

on India Talks

Biswas, an engineering graduate from Indian Institute of technology, never liked engineering and for that matter anything technical. And that’s why moved on to complete his MBA from Indian Institute of Management, thinking and planning of a career in marketing and or brand management. But as destiny would have it, he first landed a job with DY&R India on Colgate-Palmolive and thought, “let’s give it a shot.” And hasn’t turned his back on the ad industry since.

From DY&R he moved on to DMB&B/D’Arcy on Procter as an Account Manager and when he left for Indonesia was Group Head on Procter India and Mars Sri Lanka. Looking for international exposure, he signed with Pratama Bozell in June ’97, when the exchange rate was 1US$ = Rp 2400 and Indonesia was a roaring tiger and Asia’s most market driven economy (World Bank Report!). When he landed finally in December the crisis had started and Indonesian market posed a different set of challenges.

He believes, every cloud has a silver lining and post-crisis was all about managing tremendous growth and nurturing of talents. From 1999 to early 2001, under his careful guidance Bozell achieved a cumulative growth of 175% and improved in ranking amongst agencies from 12 to 7. When Bozell merged with FCB, Biswas was the most likely candidate to take over – and today, as Managing Director of FCB Indonesia, he is continuing to take his agency to new heights. FCB today is one of the full services agencies in Indonesia with specialized media (FCB Media); digital, direct and database marketing (FCBi);Planning & Research (Mind & Mood), BTL operations (Marketing Drive Indonesia) and a second agency Interface Communications.
