Why Is Jakarta’s Anniversary Celebrated on June 22?
June 22 marks the birth of Jakarta because it commemorates an important historical event in 1527, when Fatahillah successfully captured the port of Sunda Kelapa from the Portuguese. Following the victory, Sunda Kelapa was renamed Jayakarta, which means “complete victory.”
Over time, the name Jayakarta evolved into Jakarta. Since 1956, June 22 has officially been recognized as Jakarta’s anniversary and is celebrated every year as a reminder of the city’s long journey and development.
