Indonesia at 81: A Celebration of Unity, Progress and Shared Purpose
As Indonesia prepares to celebrate its 81st Independence Day on 17 August 2026, the nation is embracing the occasion not merely as a commemoration of its historic proclamation of independence, but as a month-long celebration of unity, inclusivity and collective progress.
This year’s theme, “Indonesia Berdaulat, Adil, dan Makmur” (A Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia), reflects the government’s vision of ensuring that the benefits of development are shared equitably across the archipelago while reinforcing Indonesia’s enduring values of gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and national harmony.
A Month of National Celebration
Rather than limiting celebrations to a single day, the Indonesian government has curated an extensive program of events throughout August, inviting citizens from every province and community to participate.
Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro said the commemorative program was designed collaboratively across ministries and government agencies with an emphasis on broad public participation.
The celebrations began on 1 August with a National Dhikr and Interfaith Prayer at Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas), attended by more than 100,000 people representing Indonesia’s rich religious diversity. Religious leaders from Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism offered prayers for peace, unity and the nation’s continued prosperity—a powerful reminder that Indonesia’s greatest strength lies in its diversity.
Honoring Those Who Serve the Nation
Among the highlights of Independence Month will be the presentation of Indonesia’s highest medals and honours to individuals and institutions that have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the nation.
Recipients include academics, artists, religious leaders, military personnel, bureaucrats and distinguished citizens selected through a rigorous and transparent process.
President Prabowo Subianto will also deliver his annual State of the Nation Address before Parliament on 14 August, outlining Indonesia’s achievements and future priorities before presenting the 2027 State Budget.
The Spirit of Independence
The centerpiece of the celebrations remains the 17 August Independence Day Ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.
President Prabowo Subianto will preside over both the morning flag-raising ceremony commemorating the Proclamation of Independence and the afternoon flag-lowering ceremony. Members of the public will once again have the opportunity to witness this historic event through an online registration system, continuing the government’s effort to make national celebrations more accessible.
Simultaneously, Jakarta’s iconic Monas and surrounding areas will transform into a vibrant people’s festival featuring cultural performances, traditional competitions, children’s games, live entertainment, drone shows, video mapping, fireworks, MSME exhibitions and the distribution of 500,000 free meals.
The month-long festivities will conclude with the Merdeka Run, a free public running event that symbolizes Indonesia’s collective journey towards a stronger future.

The official logo for Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, designed by Fajar Novario of Auman Design Bureau, draws inspiration from traditional Indonesian motifs found across the archipelago.
Chosen through a nationwide public vote, the design symbolizes unity in diversity, collaboration and the shared aspirations of a nation moving forward together. Its philosophy reflects the enduring principles of sovereignty, justice and prosperity—values that continue to guide Indonesia’s development.
