India Celebrates 79th Independence Day: PM Modi to Address Nation for 12th Consecutive Year
The stage is set for India’s 79th Independence Day celebrations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to hoist the tricolor flag at the historic Red Fort and address the nation for the 12th consecutive year on August 15. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 am with the traditional 21-gun salute, and will be broadcast live across television, radio, and digital platforms, including the LIVE telecast on the official portal here >>
Historical Significance
India gained independence on 15 August 1947, breaking free after more than two centuries of British colonial rule. The moment was immortalized by the midnight speech of the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who spoke of India’s tryst with destiny before hoisting the national flag for the first time. Since then, the Red Fort ceremony, led by the sitting Prime Minister, has become a cherished national tradition, symbolizing both remembrance and renewal.
The day serves as a tribute to the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s liberty and as a reaffirmation of the values enshrined in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Nationwide Preparations
Across the country, cities and towns are already awash in saffron, white, and green. Schools are rehearsing cultural programs, security arrangements are being tightened, and marketplaces are brimming with tricolor merchandise. Although no official theme has been announced yet for Independence Day 2025, the mood remains one of pride, gratitude, and optimism for the nation’s future.
As the countdown to August 15 continues, all eyes will be on the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister’s speech is expected to reflect on India’s journey over the past 78 years—and set the tone for the years ahead.
Honoring Sanitation Workers
In a gesture recognizing the vital role of cleanliness and public hygiene, this year’s celebrations will see 50 top-performing Swachhta Karamcharis from Delhi honored as special guests at the Red Fort. Each of Delhi’s zonal offices has been tasked with nominating five sanitation workers—three women and two men—along with their spouses. The Ministry of Defence is reviewing the nominations, with the final list to be compiled by the Delhi Environmental Management Services headquarters.
Officials say the move not only acknowledges the dedication of sanitation workers but also aligns with the broader vision of a clean and healthy India.
