Don’t worry, it’s not un-manly to actually use something other than soap to cleanse and nourish your skin and hair. If you still cringe at the thought of proper grooming, baby you need help. Just try the following, and if you still aren’t doing well with women, perhaps the answer lies in our fashion pages.

1. Morning Call – If you don’t already do this, honey, you are in big, big trouble. Washing your face in the morning is integral. Make sure you use a facial cleanser (no, not soap). An exfoliating scrub two to three mornings a week helps remove dead skin cells (the flaky stuff on your face the morning of a hangover) and prevents breaks-outs and blocked pores. Massage the scrub gently in a circular motion, and not in the manner you would remove grease from a frying pan.

2. The Shower – Lukewarm water is best, as hot water will strip your skin of its natural oils. Use a loofah (a rough sponge made from the fruit of a tropical plant) to remove dead skin. Shampooing doesn’t just encompass hair, but your scalp as well. Massage shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips and rinse. Use a conditioner to tame wild locks. Rinsing your hair thoroughly will prevent the build-up of shampoo residue that results in dry and “flat” hair.

3. Close Shave – Best to shave while you are still in the shower as the steam softens the hair shafts. Shave with the grain as much as possible, and use a razor with two parallel blades to prevent less irritation. Once you are out of the shower, slap on alcohol-free toner followed by moisturizer to keep your cheeks and chin soft, and your five o’clock shadow at bay.

4. Take care of your beard – The key to taking care of your beard is to clean, moisturize and maintain its shape. Clean your beard using special beard shampoo, moisturize it using special beard oil and try to brush it once in a while. If it is already growing out of shape, we would recommend to keep scissors and tweezers nearby.

5. Gel It Up – Try not to blow-dry your hair too often as it will become brittle. To keep your glorious mane in place, use gentle styling products like gel, spray or a light mousse.

6. Smelling Suave – No matter how much you think you don’t stink, it would be advisable to wear a scent-free antiperspirant-deodorant, followed by your fave cologne or perfume. Remember, two clashing scents can result in stench.

7. Pearly Whites – The best time to brush your teeth is right after breakfast. Brush for at least three minutes, including the small slab of muscle beneath your palette. Flossing regularly will get rid of food particles that can cause nasty tooth decays and toothaches.

8. Sun Screen – Guys are more vulnerable to the wind and sun because shaving strips away the uppermost layer of skin. Use water-based, oil free sunscreen and a UV-resistant lip balm.

9. Working It Right – There is no substitute for exercise. It keeps your blood circulating and therefore, your skin tight and supple. Never, ever touch your face with hands that have been on shared gym equipment. For obvious reasons, it promotes zits, blackheads and everything you don’t want on your face.

Ananya Balaji - young bharatnatyam dancer Jakarta

Ananya Balaji is a long term Indonesia resident and currently a 11th grader. She is also a dance disciple of Smt Janaki Raj Shrikanth, Prarthna Fine Arts in Jakarta. Her Bharatanatyam Arangetram (Classical Indian Dance Debut) is on Sunday, September 23rd , 2018 at Goethe Institut, Jakarta.

Indoindians had the opportunity to meet with this lovely young dancer and she shared these thoughts with us.

  1. Tell us about yourself and your interest in dance

A passionate art enthusiast, currently a 11th grader, with various hobbies such as reading , baking and watching movies. I am exceedingly passionate about Bharatanatyam and the interest stemmed when I was very small. At first, I wanted to be a ballerina and even proceeded to learn it for a couple of years. However, when I was first exposed to Bharatnatyam, my interest in ballet fizzled out  and that was when I knew what I wanted to pursue. In addition to dance, I am also learning the veena(a type of sitar) and Carnatic vocals. Despite having ventured into different aspects of fine arts, I do know that Bharatnatyam is something that I never want to stop.

  1. How did you manage to keep learning Indian traditional dance while away from India

India has an abundantly rich , diverse and beautiful culture, one of its treasures being its art forms. We have 8 classical dance forms, and to be learning one of them whilst residing away from India, is something that makes me feel immensely grateful. It really wouldn’t be possible without my guru and my parents. My parents constantly encourage me to stay linked to our Indian cultural heritage be it by dancing Bharatnatyam, reading Epics like Ramayana, listening to Indian classical music and learning to play the Veena.

  1. Who is your Guru and can you share you experience with them?

My illustrious guru is Smt. Janaki Raj Shrikanth, and it was mainly because of her I wished to pursue a journey in dance. When I was six, I went for my first Bharatnatyam concert, which was directed by none other than my guru. Mesmerized, I realized that this is what I wanted to learn and whom I wanted to learn it from. My guru is a wonderful, selfless and enthusiastic person, brimming with love and affection and wants only the best for her disciples. I am grateful and feel blessed.

  1. Was there a regime to prepare for the Arangetram?

Yes, there was. A year before the arangetram is when the practice got serious. In addition to dancing, I had to do other things such as stamina training as well as some yoga. We had a planned schedule which I had to adhere to.

  1. How do you feel about this?

For me it’s a long awaited moment, I feel excited about my first solo dance concert and I am praying that it goes well with God’s grace and my Guru’s blessings.

  1. What are your plans with dance? Do you plan to continue studying this, take it as a career?

I love to dance Bharatanatyam  and I certainly do plan to continue studying this beautiful art form. I hope to venture into other dance forms such as kathak and kuchipudi someday.  I really don’t know what life holds in store for me, but taking dance as a career sounds marvelous.

  1. What advice would you have for other youngsters interested in traditional dance forms?

Traditional art forms are intrinsically technical and aren’t things to be considered as a mere hobby. It requires a certain measure of sincerity and passion. The journey could be painful in the initial stages as the muscles would have to strengthen, but being patient enough to get through that helps one unravel the true beauty of dance. Bharatanatyam is a test of physical and mental strength, and it’s definitely worth it!

  1. Who is your favourite exponent of Bharatnatyam and why?

Honestly, there are so many but some of my favorites include Leela Samson and Priyadarshini Govind. I adore all their recitals and their perfect technique, astounding expressions and remarkable poise which entrances and inspires me.

The breakfast does not have to be large but should be enough for people to avoid eating impulsively or spontaneously. Even more so when the food eaten are fatty foods or food high in sugar. This is because when experiencing hunger, most people will eat food that is closest and most easily eaten.

Drink Tea

Another effective way to lose weight naturally is to drink certain types of tea. Among the variety of tea, you can choose one that can reduce appetite while decreasing the amount of fat in the body. The benefit of drinking tea to lose weight is not just that it tastes delicious but the tea carries many health benefits. Some of the benefits includes antioxidants, reduced risk of heart disease as well as stroke.

Snack Healthily

In the time between breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can eat snacks to stay active without starving. However the snacks you eat should be carefully chosen so as not to ruin your diet plan. If possible, try to eat light snacks that do not contain too many carbohydrates and sugar. That way, the stomach can remain full.

Some of the ideal snacks include cheese sticks, bananas, or other fruits. Nuts are also a good choice because they contain protein.

Drink a Lot of Water

In 2016, a study involving 18,000 people in the United States found that those who drank a lot consistently felt more satisfied. In addition, they also consume fewer calories, sugar, salt and cholesterol than participants who do not drink enough.

Similar to eating and snacking, you also need to pay attention to what you drink. Avoid water that contains lots of sugar. If you get bored of drinking plain water, add pieces of fruit like lemon, apples or cucumber to make infused water.

Treat Yourself

Diet often requires someone to reduce, even avoid certain types of food because they are considered ‘bad’. But one thing to keep in mind, experts and diet experts agree that ‘forbidding’ certain foods usually makes the diet fail. It is alright to cheat once in awhile and risk your diet. Consuming comfort foods like chocolate, wine or cake can be eaten as rewards to yourself, as you have tried to live a healthy life.

Losing weight does not have to be a tiring or painful process. Simply by implementing healthy habits such as drinking enough water and sleeping well, you will naturally lose weight. This is because these healthy habits can improve metabolism, making your body lose its excess fat. Other than that, you will also be allowing the body to rest, allowing it to carry on with its biological process without disturbance.

When I ask what is the largest organ of human body; protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature and permits the sensations of touch, heat and cold……..yes you guessed it right – its Skin- our beauty cover.

Human skin is subject to constant change. On the one hand, environmental factors and, on the other hand, the process associated with skin aging, it requires many nutrients and minerals that help maintain its homeostasis.

It is a proven fact that certain food items promote glowing skin, glossy hair, strong nails and clear eyes, so making them a part of your daily diet can do wonders for a Glowing Beautiful You.

So what in particular should one do to maintain an attractive appearance as the lustre and vitality of youth fades, hormones fluctuate and the body begins to change and sag?
While the fountain of youth is a myth, and there is no ‘’Magic’’ food that can push back the years and the toll they take, but certainly a ‘’Magic Diet’’ has a great deal to do with how well you look and also how beautifully your body ages. And it’s never too early to pay attention and begin implementing healthy practices.

Skin, hair and nails are made up of keratin, collagen and elastin – proteins that form building blocks, and provide strength and elasticity.

Sources of Protein for non-vegetarians are manySkinless, Boneless Chicken breast, Lean turkey, Fish – Tuna/ Salmon, Eggs.

The vegetarians need not despair; they can indulge in protein rich vegetarian food:

Vitamin C:

  • Kiwi fruit is the best source of vitamin C. Other good sources are oranges, mango, honeydew and papaya.

  • Indian Gooseberry (Amla) is particularly rich in vitamin C, but it is also rich in polyphenols. This combination is very beneficial as it fights off antioxidants but also improves digestion, reduces infection and increases immunity.

It has an incredibly high content of vitamin C and is incredibly beneficial for the complexion. It also supports the immune system and moisturizes the skin all at the same time.

  • Pomegranates– This fruit is packed with vitamin C, which helps guard against the wrinkling effects of sun damage.
  • Watermelon– This refreshing, sweet treat contains the ultimate antioxidant, vitamin C, plus lycopene and potassium, which regulates the balance of water and nutrients in cells.

Vitamin B:
Food that is rich in vitamin B makes your hair shiny.

  • Important sources of this vitamin are eggs, milk, green vegetables and poultry.
  • Silica is important to keep your hair elastic, shiny and healthy.
  • Raw oats, cucumber skin, onions and bean sprouts are rich in this mineral.
  • Oats are rich in Zinc, Biotin, Magnesium and Potassium which are key factors which protects from brittle hair & split hairs.

Fish: Eating oily fish like salmon that contain omega-3 fatty acids will help hydrating and nourishing skin. The key ingredients for a healthy hair and scalp are protein and vitamin D. Salmon is a great source of protein, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. This omega-3 fatty acid is very much essential to keep your scalp and hair shaft very well hydrated. As healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, get in more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.

Zinc and Calcium: Both these minerals help in eradicating pimples. Zinc is found in oysters, turkey, seafood, eggs and milk. Calcium is no doubt good for your bones, but helps in clearing your skin too. Calcium rich foods like skim milk, low-fat cheese and yogurt. These foods not only remove pimples but reduce wrinkles as well.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is known to ease the swelling and redness associated with sunburns. Swelling causes the stretching of skin that in turns leads to wrinkle formation.

  • Peaches and Blueberries increase the build-up of vitamin E in your body.
  • Nutsbesides being rich in protein are rich in Vitamin E which is the most important antioxidant required for your skin. It protects your skin from damage and premature ageing of the facial tissues. The best way to relish nuts and preserve all the health benefits is to eat them raw, unsalted, with the skin.
  • Sesame Seeds -They are rich in vitamin E which prevents free radical damage to the skin. They also contain copper which is necessary for the production of a certain type of antioxidants that protects the skin.

Vitamin C and Iron: Vitamin C and iron together help to reduce the dark circles under your eyes. Eat skinless chicken and red, yellow and orange peppers. These are rich in both and will help in reducing dark circles.

Carrots– They are high in beta carotene which the body converts to vitamin A. Vitamin A is one of the most important nutrients for healthy skin.

Kale and Spinach – These vital veggies contain special phytonutrients, or antioxidant compounds, that help guard against damage caused by the sun. Spinach is loaded with beta-carotene and lutein, two nutrients that have been shown to improve skin elasticity.

Water: Drink as much as water as you can. Water removes the toxins from the body and refreshes your skin and makes in glow. Water hydrates your skin and keeps it supple.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes contains skin-cancer-fighting antioxidants: beta-carotene, vitamin C and lycopene. Eat tomatoes in any form and you will ingest these antioxidants. To increase the body’s absorption of lycopene cook tomatoes in a little olive oil.

Green Tea:The anti-inflammatory properties found in green tea are simply unbelievable. Counted among the healthiest of all drinks green tea helps prevent or reduce the risk of skin cancer as well. So fill a big thermos with green tea in the morning, and sip it all day — hot at first, over ice later, if you like. Start today, and continue drinking green tea every day for the rest of the week. Green Tea also helps in diminishing brown spots.

Yogurt/Curd: Yogurt has many healthy enzymes and adds natural oils to the skin. It can diminish pore size, a frequent nuisance for the skin, and can improve the overall skin texture, besides adding a healthy glow to your skin. To make yogurt a staple in your daily diet we recommend you replace mayonnaise and salad dressings with yogurt or try replacing ice cream and milkshake with frozen yogurt and mixed fruit yogurt smoothie.

Olive Oil:The “good fats” in olive oil are highly beneficial; they contain heart-healthy omega-3s, which improve circulation, leaving skin rosy and supple.
Olive oil in your weight loss diet recipes like salad which are rich in omega 3 fatty acid provides the essential oils which helps in lubricating & reducing inflammation which often leads to redness, acne, and scaly skin.

Coconut Oil: Healthy fat from Coconut Oil also contains vitamins E, K and minerals, which are one of the best natural nutrients for your hair, they aid in boosting growth and shine by moisturizing the scale

Make this year that you practice happiness for YOU…by doing more of this.

As we said, HAPPINESS is the ultimate currency. For example, you can have loads of money, but if you are not happy, then your life can sort of suck. So here’s some of what I have learnt and practice in my quest to be a slave to happiness. 😉

1.Focus on happiness. Focus on joy and the things that bring you joy. Decide that since happiness is so important, that you will invest some of your time, energy and money, in getting to know happiness better. Buy a book on it. Listen to an audio program on it. I have mentioned this before. The ‘pursuit of happiness’ does not mean to chase it. The original meaning of pursuit was to practice! Being surrounded and immersed in happiness = feeling more happiness in your life.

2. Spend time with happy people. Choose to spend the majority of your time with energetic, positive, optimistic, passionate, inspiring and happy people. You have probably heard the saying that you are the average of the 5 people you spend most time with. Interesting. More happiness around you = more happiness in and through you.

3. Stop making assumptions. About what your partner thinks, what the boss thinks, what your friends think, and what your children think. Stop making assumptions about what could go wrong in a situation. When you stick with WHAT IS (the ‘facts’ in front of you), and take the emotion of assumptions out of the picture, you are more likely to find a quicker and more effective solution to whatever your challenges are. Feeling less overwhelmed (by things that actually do not exist outside the confines of your mind) = more happiness.

4. ALWAYS be kind to yourself. Never say you are bad at something, just say that you are not great, yet. If you make a mistake say, “Oh phooey I made a mistake. Best fix that if I can.” No other person on the planet is perfect. So don’t be ashamed if you make a mistake, because your favorite hero has probably made as many as you. In fact lots of people are ‘great’ because they made so many mistakes. Being nice to yourself = a house for happiness.

5. Ask better questions. One difference between an optimist and a pessimist is the question they ask when something happens. Let me list the two questions and then see if you can figure out which question each of them asks.

1) “What is wrong (or could be wrong) with this situation?” and

2) “What is great (or could be great) with this situation?”

Bit of a no-brainer. You can actually learn to be optimistic, just by FOCUSING on the good in all situations. It is always there. Just ask a positive question. Positive question = positive answer = happy feelings.

6. Check in on your body. Just by standing up tall, looking ahead or high, and breathing deeply; you can change your mood significantly. Your body is connected to your emotions. So by changing your body or physiology you can change your mood. Also moving your body (a.k.a. physical activity) helps the immune system function, energizes you, creates a feel-good cocktail of chemicals, and at a psychological level makes you feel better about yourself. More energy = more ability to do the things you need to do to make you happy.

7. Practice integrity – as one of your highest virtues. There is so much power and strength in telling the truth, to others and to yourself. And this is not just at the emotional level. Studies have shown that your body is much physically stronger when telling the truth and weaker when lying. It is ok to change your mind, and even to break a promise, IF you come from a place of integrity (and compassion). For instance you could say, “I know I said that I would go with you to the party, but the truth of the matter is that I really do not want to go at all.” Now someone might be pissed off with you, but they are less likely to be annoyed at you not going and more annoyed that you did not say what you really thought (your truth). This is HUGE if you want to like yourself more and place a high worth on yourself. Integrity = deeper happiness

8. Be conscious of what you put in your mouth. Really conscious. Know that if you put great fuel into your body that the engine will work at its optimum! Your energy will be high, your resilience will be greatly increased, your immune system will function better, and you will have a more healthy glow. Great food = great energy = stable emotions = ability to do more = greater health = more happiness!

9. Practice Gratitude. Yep. Practice it. Physically say what you are grateful for each and every day. To the universe, to your dog, to your fruit tree, to your partner, to your friends, to your family, to your employees, to your body, to your past, to life’s opportunities, etc. There is a direct link (proven in numerous studies) between gratitude and happiness. Expressing gratitude = happiness.

10. Know where you want to go. It is much easier to get there if you know where there is. The more detail, the more likely to arrive at the right place at the right time. It is like me saying to you, let’s meet in China. If we leave from two separate locations, the chances of us actually meeting are about a bazillion to one! But if we say, let’s meet in Beijing, at the Hilton Hotel Wangfujing, in the hotel lobby, at 10am local time on 2 January; we WILL meet up. It allowed us to know the final destination and therefore put a PLAN in place to make it happen. Future goals (with good meaning) = happy campers!
