In time when our attention is dominated by the hustle and bustle of city and the day just spent on strategy, meeting and managing issues, anything that takes us back to nature will not only be relieving but rejuvenating.

I am happy that 6 years ago I started birding as a hobby and have been able to watch nature close up. Birding has given me a sense of balance and completely a different perspective to life.

This has taken me to so many places, to meet many wonderful people and the best of all the joy of being up close to the nature, to witness some of the wonders of God’s creation.

I feel I still have “many mountains to climb” and yet to capture my best image. You may see my photographs at

Painting came to me at a stage in life where I had the time and the ability to explore various creative mediums. Leaving the corporate world after 16 years was fiercely fearful in itself. Trying to keep myself happily involved yet the creative satisfaction was primary. I’ve been a very creative person from the beginning, toying with needlework, croquet, embroidery and fabric painting has been part of growing up. Always enjoyed the satisfaction that a completed piece brings to the creator. So once the opportunity for oil painting knocked my doors I grabbed it with both hands.

I would call myself a trained artist who has some natural abilities which have been enhanced and sharpened. Feel blessed and happy that I could realize my talent and had the platform to explore it further. Painting has been with me since last 4-5 years only, so I would like to believe I am still a learner.
My subjects are totally based on what appeals to me and what I would like to see around me. The purpose of each canvas has been to explore a different technique each time. Pure oils to blending oils and acrylics is been the staple. Have been inspired by a few European and Vietnamese painters as well.

An arts graduate majoring in drawing and painting, Vijay Laxmi Birla became fascinated with art ever since her childhood. Vijay Laxmi does not restrict herself to any surface or medium. Her artistic journey covered sketches, landscapes, portraits, Tanjore and texture. She enjoys working with pencils and charcoal, water colours and especially acrylic and oil. To practice any painting, no matter how well or badly, we always start with still life …..this is the only way to make our soul grow. These paintings seem to be easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you start doing it. It relaxes my mind to paint fruits. I do not bring to it the same tension of spirit as when am in front of an object. When I paint fruits with jugs and the table linen. I arrange the tones. I try out different values boldly without worrying about wasting a canvas.

Nisha Gupta moved to Jakarta, Indonesia as a trailing spouse with her family having spent over a decade working as a consultant in corporate America. She came to art unexpectedly about a year ago.  Having spent several hours in traffic heavy Jakarta during her daily commutes, she started to sketch in the car to break the monotony. From sketching in the car as a worthwhile pastime and encouragement from her art-inclined friends, she continued her artistic journey into more innovative mediums such as water colors and oils. Her most recent discovery has been acrylics using the palette knife. Being self-taught curious artist with no prior training, she has yet so much to learn. Poverty and hardship is something that reminds us daily here in Jakarta, and Nisha wishes to give back to the community using her passion in art.

Rashi Sharda is an artist who venerates creativity across multiple forms, genres and media. Her upbringing in the beautiful city of Jaipur, amidst an art-loving family has had a deep impact on her personality, beliefs, and philosophy. Rashi’s professional proficiency at classical Indian singing, musical instruments and dance forms play a big role in rendering the art-form which she loves the most: Painting!

Rashi has lived in cities like Jaipur, Bandung and Jakarta and has travelled to countless more, often observing the universal attributes that connect humanity across civilisations. She is intrigued by the common denominator that distils across myriad cultures and philosophies of the world and tries to render her understanding of the universally primal conditions of the human way of life in her artworks.

For this exhibition, Rashi is projecting her thoughts on Sufi cults originating in Turkey and their representations in Rumi’s masterpieces . She has used aboriginal dot painting technique of Australian origin which she picked up in Indonesia, to literally connect the dots that the Turkish dervishes emulate with their circular dance form. She has tried to bring forth the use of a mathematically stable circle to form spiritually eccentric spirals that are prolifically observed in Turkish Sufism. Concept of titles with Indian etymology on display offers the perfect melange of cultures that she herself represents.

Rashi has a bachelors degree in fine arts from Jaipur and enjoys working in oils , acrylics , watercolors , charcoal , pens and exploring new mediums.

Suvarna Mantha is an art enthusiast who has a keen interest in Painting. Her works include landscapes, portraits, sketches. Has a special interest in oil paintings where she has a repertoire of paintings of Indian Gods in their various forms. Recently she has generated an interest in depicting Natural Animals in their natural habitats.

She has been living in Jakarta for last 3 years. She has participated in a few India club Jakarta exhibitions over the last 2 years in Jakarta.



Vaishali Deepak is a self- confessed ‘accidental artist’. She credits her foray into painting to an ‘empty wall’ in her living room. This happened almost half a decade ago when she shifted to a new apartment and started scouring local shops and malls for a painting to adorn one of the massive walls in her apartment. Unable to find what she was looking for, she decided to visit the local art supplies store and get creative on her own. Little did she realise that this impromptu trip to the art shop will open a whole new realm for her. Excited by the wide array of  paints and colours available, she bought a few canvas and let her inner artist take over. Since then, her love affair with canvas has continued and added multifarious colors to her life. Her medium of expression is mainly acrylics and her style is modern contemporary. She believes that art is the poetry of your soul and if you have your colors and brushes with you, all you need is to paint your paradise and walk right into it.


Ujwala Prabhu: the journey of understanding and making art, for me, is a continuous learning process: Improving existing skills, learning new ones and most of all growing with the experiments and experiences.  Drawing and painting are an integral part of my life, something I am passionate about.

People, their moods, interactions and emotions are an ongoing source of curiosity and interest to me. What I’m searching for is their inner personalities, their thoughts and there are stories I weave around them as I work. I like portraying feelings of people when they are alone, lost in their thoughts, caught unawares or engaged in activity which has captured their attention. These are the special moments that appeal to me most. I love to experiment and use a variety of medium ranging from paint, charcoal, printmaking, to clay and the digital medium. Regardless, my focus remains fixed on the human form.


We’ve all seen the women in Brahmin families wear the Madisar with elegance and the men wearing Pancha Kachcham with confidence. Ever wondered why they wear these clothing specifically?

Shanthi Seshadari explains what Madisar style of saree draping signifies and how beneficial it is:

MADISAAR STYLE DRAPING of the 9 yards saree

The traditional married Brahmin woman is draped in a nine-yard saree, also known as Madisaar. It is a symbol of her transformation from a girl to a woman who is now married. Normally sarees are six yards in length, but since the Madisaar is worn in a different style, one requires a nine-yard saree to wear it. It is a very important part of the Iyer and Iyengar culture. Both Iyer and Iyengar Brahmin wear Madisaars for all important occasions in their lives, starting with marriage, followed by Seemandham (form of a baby shower), all important poojas, and death ceremonies

Madi is the portion of the long pallu which is folded into two, lengthwise and tucked away at the back and this prevents it from slipping from the shoulder. The other word is Thaar – It means bringing a portion of dhoti or saree from front, between the legs and tucking it at the small of back. This will make the dhoti or saree like a pajama and helps free movement of legs. Also serves as a pair of pants. This word has now become ‘Saar ‘.

Madisaar has a pressing not on both of hip nerves and behind backbone. This helps in pressing the nerves so that the woman who wears it do not feel hungry or thirsty. As there were more vrathams followed in those days, madisaar helps in making them less hungry and thirsty. And on festive occasions, you cannot take a pass in mid-session. Madisaar helps in controlling the process of excretion.

It is believed that Madisar especially the Kachcham (if you know to drape) at the back acts as a cushion to the lumbar area and it is exactly like that of the hip belt orthopedics suggest for people with back ache. Also, Madisar cushions our uterus and acts as a shock absorber and that’s why our ancestors hardly had any miscarriage or infertility problems.

  • Artists should be over 21 yrs old
  • All entries must be the original work of the applicant and completed within the last three years.
  • Not accepted: kits, paint-by-number pieces, photocopies or photography of artwork, magazine or book illustrations, random snapshots.
  • Indoindians reserve the right to disqualify entries they consider to be unacceptable or inappropriate for a public exhibit.

Preparing Entries:

  • All artwork will need an identification label placed on the back.
  • All artwork will need a descriptive label printed on cardpaper with following details: This will be displayed below the artwork.
    1. Artist Name
    2. Title of the artwork
    3. Date of the artwork
    4. Size of the artwork
    5. The medium of the artwork
    6. Price
    7. Artist email id/mobile number
  • All two-dimensional entries should be matted, framed and/or ready to hang with wire securely on the back. All work must measure no more than 100 cm in any direction or weigh more than 10kg. Artwork that does not meet size limitations or specification will be disqualified.

Terms of Use & Participation

  • Entrants grant Indoindians, a non-exclusive license to use images of their work, in print and online, internationally, in Perpetuity.
  • Copyright for submitted works remains the property of the entrant.
  • When an image is used, the artist and title of the work will be acknowledged.
  • Each artist to provide 4 artworks
  • Artworks to be deposited at 1Park, Gandaria on Saturday, 20th April
  • All artists are requested to be at venue at 11am on Sunday, 21st April for the inauguration.
  • All artists are expected to be present during the art auction on Sunday, 29th April from 4pm onwards till closing.
  • Artwork can be collected after the exhibition on Sunday, 21st April at 6pm after the Charity Auction.

On the 8th March 2019, Bina Nusantara University  invited a prestigious speaker 2004 Nobel Laureate winner in economics category, Professor Finn Kydland to come to Indonesia for knowledge sharing economic seminar.

The auditorium was filled with participants abuzz when the seminar was opened by COO and Rector of BINUS, Bernard Gunawan. As Indonesia is in process of improving its economy, BINUS students are expected to fulfill their role and be able to participate in a more globalized world.

Chairman of International Peace Foundation, Uwe Morawetz, also spoke to the room. With this collaboration, he hopes to synergize peace and education in the growth of corporations which would spill over to various parts of life such as corporations, politicians, scientists, artists, the media and onwards to our families, friends and communities. Some of the foundation’s efforts include building bridges among communities by listening, opening up to new talks and developing innovative forms of corporation.

Finally, the economic seminar began with the introduction by moderator and lecturer Dr. Gatot Soepriyanto.

All in all, the seminar lecture by professor Finn Kydland was very informative and has opened up many eyes on the role of government and consistent economic policies to a country’s economy. This trend is not only seen in some countries, but major countries who are economically strong as a whole. Even countries with moderate economic power have proven his views on the subject.

Many people raised their hands during the panel session to inquire his thoughts and opinions on various issues on economy including about Indonesia’s economy in the future and the digital revolution. Interestingly, there is a large variety of people attending the event from BINUS school students to government project workers.

Afterwards, a press conference was held for any additional questions to Professor Kyland.

Dr. Diah Wihardini, director of BINUS Global and host of the event said in the press conference, “The primary reason is because BINUS university have a vision to become a global university by always facilitating our students to have a more global experience. We expect our students to have a wider knowledge base or have a much more global perspective, which is why we regularly invite foreign speakers and field experts. Second of all, we hope to apply our second mission which is to educate and empower society to help build and serve Indonesia through participation in ASEAN Bridges events. Other than that, we aim is to empower our students, the future generation and the general public to actively participate in the knowledge development brought by these Nobel winners. These educational talks serve as inspiration to motivate the future generation in working and persevering to helping our beloved nation on their efforts for a lasting development. It is also an effort on our part to strengthen the ties of friendship amongst us.”

Uwe Morawetz was also present to answer questions, to which he was asked, “Why has IDF chosen indonesia and BINUS university to conduct the bridges program especially with the regard of sustainable economic development?”

As a reply, he explained, “We have hosted many bridges events in Indonesia since two years ago where we hosted events together with Universitas Gadjah Mada and University of Indonesia. During this time we bought various nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine and economics to speak here in indonesia under the chairmanship of vice president Yusuf Kalla.

Uwe continued, “At that time we had no one for physics to speak at the university. Now, the university chose a nobel laureate for economics. Maybe in the future there will be other nobel laureates in other fields-someone from chemistry for example, can come and speak at binus university. Our foundation facilitates the dialogue because we think that the first step towards peace is dialogue and that the basis for peace is education. Those are the main reasons why we bring the nobel laureates to speak at the universities here in Indonesia.”

Professor Finn Kydland present in the room was asked, “what are the lessons that you are hoping the audience took from your lecture?”

“The main one-which is the hallmark of modern macroeconomy-is about the hypotenuse of expectations for future policy. What happens, what actions are taken by households and businesses this year, next year and such. One of the key messages would be what represents good policy from perspective of welfare in Indonesia. Clearly it’s better if you have had a good idea about what congregated circumfer would be a good thing. Even if it’s not the completely optimal policy, yet it’s a good policy and everyone can feel confident about making their important decisions in the expectation about what they would be from the next 5 or 10 years,” he replies.

When the days are busy, there will be times when your fatigue takes over. You might feel tired, exhausted, even too depressed to relax at your free time. Feeling this way will clearly affect your productivity and endurance level. At this kind of time, it is paramount that you take care of your mental health. You will feel refreshed, rejuvenated from your ordeal and feel more ready to tackle the day.

Here are 9 practical ways to improve your mental health:

  1. First things first-exercise.

For thousands of years, the benefits of exercise have been widely touted by the people of the world. The main function of exercise is to improve the body from increasing basic organ functions to improving the state of the muscles. However one’s physical improvement would also indirectly affect mental health.

Exercise helps the heart pump blood around the body, distributing oxygen and enhancing the feeling of wellbeing all around the body. Not only that, exercise would help the excretion of several feel-good hormones such as endorphins, dopamine and serotonin. It is no wonder that  our body will be filled with happiness and euphoria after a workout session. Practice regular exercise to maintain health and fill your mind with happiness.

2. Listen to music that boosts your mood or do something that invigorates your mood.

When feeling sluggish, music is one that that can significantly change your mood for the better. However as music is according to taste, each music genre has a different effect to the body. classical music can refresh the mind one does not mean that it can refresh the minds of others. Otherwise, taking a short walk around the park is something that you could do to improve your mood. Strolling around in the park, surrounded by the beautiful view and breathing in fresh air can do wonders for your emotional state at the time.

This can be an effective method of boosting your mood at times when you feel blue. Clearing out your mind will definitely remove the element of stress, anxiety and make way of creativity and happiness in your life.

3. Be realistic on your goals.

Setting goals is something that would help you restructure and plan your life in the future. Fulfilling and maximizing your potential is a good thing, but it will turn negative when you are being unrealistic in your expectations and force yourself to reach the short amount of deadline.

When approaching your goals, it is also important not to be too appreciate yourself in the process. Try not to be too harsh and reprimand yourself too much, as that is what will create stress in your life. A bit of pressure can generate motivation in your life and give you the push to achieve your goals, but too much will create stress that leads to a nervous breakdown.

Ask yourself these questions: What is the priority goal that I want to achieve within these three months? What steps should I take in order to reach it? Can it actually be done? If that plan fails, what do I plan to do with my life next?

4. Have a much more positive frame of mind  

It’s very easy to see and think that the grass is greener on the other side. Or overthinking about things that do not matter. In truth, these thoughts would only crowd your mind and negatively affect your mental health. Those who are prone to these sorts of thoughts should be very careful of their frame of mind, as it can indirectly affect their body health.

A positive frame of mind comes from gratitude and thinking positively about anything that comes your way. Continuously remind and train yourself into feeling more gratitude in life by counting the blessings you have in your life. Increase effectiveness by writing down all the things you are grateful for in this life.

Do it regularly every day, and you might find yourself with a much more positive frame of mind. At the end of the day, you’ll be surprised with the amount of blessings that you have on a daily basis and realize how lucky you are in life. Moreover, you will find that your blessings count out more that even to shortcomings.


5. Try negative visualization

Negative thoughts are very damaging your mental health, your life and even your physical state of mind. Fear is a handicap, where it affects your decision-making. Prevent negative thoughts and fear from taking over your life by thinking of worst possible outcome.

According to stoic philosophy, thinking about the worst thing that could ever happen in your life will prepare and challenge your mind. Close your eyes and fill your mind with the worst things that could happen to you-the possibilities, what terrible thing that can happen in the near future and whatever type of fear that plagues you. Open your eyes, and you will realize that nothing has happened yet and you will be fine despite the thoughts that appear in your head.

6. A support network will help you immensely in reaching your mental health goals.

Change of personality or achieving goals may only involve your abilities and strength in mind. But the people around you-friends, family, relatives-will support your goals and help you achieve it faster.

Asking the help from loved ones or friends can set you on the right path whenever you stray and would instill motivation when you are feeling down. Shutting people out or shying away from people might even make you lonely and more depressed. Having a positive environment would therefore be extremely beneficial to your goals. Reach out when feeling negative-plan a fun day out with them and share the thoughts that have been plaguing your mind.

7. Find your purpose for living

BJ Miller, a TED speaker once told his incredible story when he was lying in a hospital. At one time, a nurse from the burn unit wanted to cheer him up by bringing snowball from outside the hospital. The sensation of melting snow at the palm of his left hand filled him with awe at the world. It made him feel gratitude that he was alive even after losing three of his limbs.

You may not realize it, but the simple things in life is what makes life worth living. Appreciate life by being more aware of you surroundings and taking everything into your mind.

8. Meditation: Just one minute is enough to create a profound effect in your mind


With a busy life and everything competing for your attention, maintaining a meditation habit can be tricky. Start small by meditating for just 60 seconds a day, then increasing the duration as you gradually advance. Even doing it for one minute can impact your mental health in a big way, affecting the state of your mind and body. Modern technology has also made this much easier, in which there are many apps available to help with your meditation.

9. Laughter and happiness is the key to a healthy, optimistic mind

Banish negative thoughts from your mind by removing the heavy weight in your mind. One of the most effective way to free your mind of unnecessary stress is by making yourself happy.

Find things that would make you happy. This can be deliberately done by finding something that will incite laughter. It can be reading funny books, reading stories or watching comedy shows. Laughter is something that has been known to reduce one’s stress and anxiety. Smiling in deliberation also reduces heart rate and will make you feel calmer when stressed with a stressful situation.

Overall health cannot be achieved without taking care of the mind as well as one’s physical state. When you are feeling blue or depressed, that means that your mind is suffering and in need of care. Return the state of your health by following the tips mentioned above. A healthy state of mind is based on fulfilled needs and continuous care.  Which is why it’s important to spare some time off your busy schedule in order to care for your body and mind. Doing that ensures that you will feel balanced enough to do the chores productively without feeling imbalanced or stressed.

For some people, getting a good nights sleep is something that is difficult to achieve. The busy lifestyle filled with tasks and chores are more likely to make it harder for you to relax. Sleeping would therefore take much more effort and some would even need help from modern technology. At the same time, sleep is something that is monumental to our growth and our overall development.

Here are several tips for a healthier bedroom:

  1. Turn off screens before bedtime

According to research, blue screen can negatively impact your sleep. Blue light rays emitted through screens tricks your body in order not to produce melanin, which is essential for sleep. As a result, you are less inclined to sleep based on the body’s natural sleep cycle. This could continue well into the morning, where you will feel groggy, sleepy and fatigued from lack of sleep.

Prevent this from happening by turning on the alarm a few hours before bedtime. We would also recommend setting up a bedtime routine and following through with everything. Turning off all the screens in your bedroom from TV, phone or computer on your bedroom will ensure that it would not disrupt your natural sleeping process.

  1. Get a green mattress

When sleeping, you would spend most of the time on the mattress. Yet, it is unknown by most that mattresses can pose several problems to your health if you are not aware. When purchasing a mattress, be aware of the material it’s made of. Most of the time, it’s made from petroleum-based polyurethane which can be dangerous if combined with chemical glues and flame retardants. Over a period of time, the mattress may start to emit chemical odors and volatile organic compounds (or VOCs).

Another thing to note about flame retardants is that it accumulates over time in the body and has been said to trigger changes in the immune and nervous system, disruptions in thyroid function, and other health issues.

Most people are able to withstand the risks of having these mattresses, but that it may cause problems for others who are intolerant to unhealthy air quality, chemical sensitivities or allergies. Choosing a healthy and green mattress would therefore help your body in the long run. What you could do is find companies that are transparent about the materials used in mattresses as not all mattress companies list out the ingredients used to make their mattresses.

  1. Fill bedroom with plants

The most common and well-known way to clean up the air quality in the bedroom is to put in plants. Not only do they remove toxic particles in the air, but it can also filter air and enhance the overall look of the room by trapping in the negative air while breathing.

Any type of plant is suitable and can create quality air change in the room, however there are certain plants that would be especially effective for this purpose. Snake plants, spider plants, or golden pothos are just several types of plants that you can put in your room. Other than clean air, plants are also known to lower anxiety and stress. In that way, your sleep will be healthier and much deeper.

  1. Find suitable music to accompany your bedtime

The noises you hear when sleeping could also change the duration and quality of sleep. Music is said to create changes to one’s mood, which can guide you through your sleep. Rather than choosing fast paced, cheerful music that could quicken the pace of heart, choose songs that are calm and soothing. Classical or folk songs are just some of the types of music that you can listen to before you sleep.

Otherwise, you can also use a white noise machine to drown out noisiness that negatively impacts your sleep. Whether it is a snoring roommate, car honks or a house party, all of these problems can be solved using a white noise machine.

  1. Prepare a humidifier

Spending a lot of time in AC can affect our health negatively from dry skin, sinus congestion, dry cough, nose irritation and more symptoms. You can have a much more comfortable sleep without dryness bothering you by using a humidifier while you sleep.

Humidifiers can prevent, help and minimize symptoms of numerous health issues. Those who are on the verge of a flu find that it cured their symptoms and people who cough may find that it has become more productive. Asthma sufferers and those who suffer from allergy may also find that their symptoms have decreased.

  1. Turn down the lights

Lighting is considered quite close to the effects of blue light. It halts the production of melatonin which is responsible to make people sleep. Depending on the lighting used at home, it can affect your sleep differently. Bright white light is known to increase one’s alertness and suppressing the production of melatonin in the body. Warm light is just the same although there is less intensity in disruption to melatonin.  Which is why research has shown that dimming the lights can help you feel sleepier and stick to a regular schedule.

For better sleep, try using pink or red lights (has been shown to affect sleep the least) or dim the lights for a better effect.

  1. Clean up clutter

Clutter can cause numerous health issues from asthma, allergy and more. Getting rid of clutter would therefore help you to have better sleep. Keeping your room clean will rid you of physical ailments to mental ones such as headaches and stress.

Solve this problem by having plenty of storage. The number one reason for a messy room is that there are many things that do not belong there. First, you should categorize the items and put the things in place whenever possible. Second, you can also maximize your bedroom space by adding shelves. You room will be speck clean with no dust or mites to bother your sleep!

  1. Make full use of muted colors

Customizing colors for the bedroom is one of the fun things that you can do when decorating a room. These colors would add stylistic value to your room and boost anyone’s mood who enters it. A research has even found that those who slept in blue rooms are able to sleep the best for 7 hours and 52 minutes compared to other colors.

The quality of paint can also affect the overall air quality. We would recommend using paint with minimal or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Be careful of these compounds, as it gets released to the air and can cause headaches and dizziness.

You may not realize it, but there are many things in the bedroom that can affect your health and sleeping process. Overall health is also important, as many of these things can change the state of your health in the long run.

Straight To Your Head

Thirty seconds after your first sip, alcohol races into your brain. It slows down the chemicals and pathways that your brain cells use to send messages.

That alters your mood, slows your reflexes, and throws off your balance.

You also can’t think straight, which you may not recall later, because you’ll struggle to store things in long-term memory.

Your Brain Shrinks

If you drink heavily for a long time, booze can affect how your brain looks and works. Its cells start to change and even get smaller.

Too much alcohol can actually shrink your brain.

And that’ll have big effects on your ability to think, learn, and remember things.

It can also make it harder to keep a steady body temperature and control your movements.

Does It Help You Sleep?

Alcohol’s slow-down effect on your brain can make you drowsy, so you may doze off more easily. But you won’t sleep well.

Your body processes alcohol throughout the night. Once the effects wear off, it leaves you tossing and turning.

You don’t get that good REM sleep your body needs to feel restored.

And you’re more likely to have nightmares and vivid dreams.

You’ll also probably wake up more often for trips to the bathroom.


More Stomach Acid

Booze irritates the lining of your stomach and makes your digestive juices flow.

When enough acid and alcohol build up, you get nauseated and you may throw up.

Years of heavy drinking can cause painful sores called ulcers in your stomach.

And high levels of stomach juices mean you won’t feel hungry.

That’s one reason long-term drinkers often don’t get all the nutrients they need.

Diarrhea and Heartburn

Your small intestine and colon get irritated, too. Alcohol throws off the normal speed that food moves through them.

That’s why hard drinking can lead to diarrhea, which can turn into a long-term problem.

Why You Have to Pee…Again

Your brain gives off a hormone that keeps your kidneys from making too much urine.

But when alcohol swings into action, it tells your brain to hold off.

That means you have to go more often, which can leave you dehydrated.

When you drink heavily for years, that extra workload and the toxic effects of alcohol can wear your kidneys down.

The Steps to Liver Disease

Your liver breaks down almost all the alcohol you drink. In the process, it handles a lot of toxins.

Over time, heavy drinking makes the organ fatty and  thicker, fibrous tissue builds up. That limits blood flow, so liver cells don’t get what they need to survive.

As they die off, the liver gets scars and stops working as well, a disease called cirrhosis.

This may lead to increased pressure in blood pressure in the liver , causing rupture of veins in the stomach, and bleeding – causing death.

Pancreas Damage and Diabetes

Normally, this organ makes insulin and other chemicals that help your intestines break down food.

But alcohol jams that process up. The chemicals stay inside the pancreas.

Along with toxins from alcohol, they cause inflammation in the organ, which can lead to serious damage.

After years, that means you won’t be able to make the insulin you need, which can lead to diabetes.

It also makes you more likely to get pancreatic cancer.

What’s a Hangover?

That cotton-mouthed, bleary-eyed morning-after is no accident. Alcohol makes you dehydrated and makes blood vessels in your body and brain expand.

That gives you your headache. Your stomach wants to get rid of the toxins and acid that booze churns up, which gives you nausea and vomiting.

And because your liver was so busy processing alcohol, it didn’t release enough sugar into your blood, bringing on weakness and the shakes.


An Offbeat Heart

One night of binge drinking can jumble the electrical signals that keep your heart’s rhythm steady.

If you do it for years, you can make those changes permanent. And, alcohol can literally wear your heart out.

Over time, it causes heart muscles to droop and stretch, like an old rubber band.

It can’t pump blood as well, and that impacts every part of your body.


A Change in Body Temperature & BP

Alcohol widens your blood vessels, making more blood flow to your skin. That makes you blush and feel warm and toasty.

But not for long. The heat from that extra blood passes right out of your body, causing your temperature to drop.

On the other hand, long-term, heavy drinking boosts your blood pressure.

It makes your body release stress hormones that narrow blood vessels, so your heart has to pump harder to push blood through.

A Weaker Immune System

You might not link a cold with a night of drinking, but there might be a connection.

Alcohol puts the brakes on your immune system. Your body can’t make the numbers of white blood cells it needs to fight germs.

So for 24 hours after drinking, you’re more likely to get sick. Long-term, heavy drinkers are much more likely to get illnesses like pneumonia and tuberculosis.

Hormone Havoc

These powerful chemicals manage everything from your sex drive to how fast you digest food. To keep it all going smoothly, you need them in the right balance.

But alcohol throws them out of whack. In women, that can knock your periods off cycle and cause problems getting pregnant.

In men, it can mean trouble getting an erection, a lower sperm count, shrinking testicles, and breast growth.

Hearing Loss

Alcohol impacts your hearing, but no ones sure exactly how. It could be that it messes with the part of your brain that processes sound.

Or it might damage the nerves and tiny hairs in your inner ear that help you hear.

However it happens, drinking means you need a sound to be louder so you can hear it.

And that can become permanent. Long-term drinkers often have hearing loss.



Thin Bones, Less Muscle

Heavy drinking can throw off your calcium levels. Along with the hormone changes that alcohol triggers, that can keep your body from building new bone.

They get thinner and more fragile, a condition called osteoporosis. Booze also limits blood flow to your muscles and gets in the way of the proteins that build them up.

Over time, you’ll have lower muscle mass and less strength.

From ancient trade ties to a fashion statement across 30 countries, Ikat is a really fascinating weave, which universally symbolizes wealth, power and prestige. A shared textile art especially between India and Indonesia.

A visually beautiful and artistic, textile dyeing and weaving technique involves specific computations that focus on mathematical symmetry  – where every inch is calculated and connected.

The very term ikat is derived from Indonesian mengikat, meaning “to tie” – a reference to the distinctive technique used to create them. A complex, skill-intensive process of marking, tying and dyeing the design into the yarn. This process may be repeated multiple times to produce elaborate, multicolored patterns. When the dyeing is finished all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth. The weaving process then reveals the rich and intricate patterns in the resulting fabric.

Although united by a common technique, ikat textiles are astonishingly diverse in their imagery, which ranges from bold geometric compositions to figurative patterns of striking visual and technical virtuosity. As the surface design is created in the yarns rather than on the finished cloth, in ikat both fabric faces are patterned.

It is an incredible feat of textile manufacturing process; an art form that, when conducted the traditional handwoven way to the most expert degree, can take between 1-2 years to complete.

This centuries old weaving process so tedious and painstaking that Ikat has been termed as ‘Poetry of the Loom’ yields a beautiful product with an intentional bleed that has a slightly blurry or fuzzy appearance. This characteristic blurriness” to the design of ikat textiles is a result of the extreme difficulty the weaver has lining up the dyed yarns so that the pattern comes out perfectly in the finished cloth. The blurriness can be reduced by using finer yarns or by the skill of the crafts person. Ikats with little blurriness, multiple colours and complicated patterns are more difficult to create and therefore often more expensive. However, the blurriness that is so characteristic of ikat is often prized by textile collectors.

History of Ikat

The ancient trade routes of Asia blur the Ikat origins history into one tapestry. Quite fitting, considering the fuzzy Ikat style.

Textile experts believe that the art evolved in various places in Indonesia and other South East Asian countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand. They have a long history of developing the ikat weaving style; each with a flavor of its own.

Ikat has been part of the Indonesian archipelago’s cultural history for millennia. Over time, different regions across Indonesia’s 17,000 islands perfected their own designs and production styles, which are still regionally represented today.

Ikat is not India’s indigenous textile, and is thought to have come to India long, long ago; because of its trade ties in the ancient times with China and Indonesia. In fact, the fine quality of ikat from India became so popular that at one point in history, ikat was taken as currency on the famous Silk Route in ancient times. The oldest surviving example of Ikat was an Indian Odishan style found in a Pharaohs tomb. It’s also proof of the longstanding trade between India and Egypt.

In India, it came to be developed as a prominent handloom textile art in three major regions – Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, Gujarat, and Odisha. Over the years, these three regions developed their own style of ikat weaving – each distinct in pattern and the way the yarn is dyed and used.

Types of Ikat

There are 3 styles of Ikat production. In order of difficulty, they are: Warp, Weft and Double Ikat.

Warp ikat

The Iban of Borneo, the Toba Batak’s of North Sumatra and cultures throughout Nusa Tenggara – from Flores to Sumba – have a strong Warp Ikat tradition.

In warp ikat it is only the warp yarns that are dyed using the ikat technique. The weft yarns are dyed a solid colour. The ikat pattern is clearly visible in the warp yarns wound onto the loom even before the weft is woven in. Warp ikat is, amongst others, produced in Indonesia; more specifically in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra by respectively the Dayaks, Torajans and Bataks.

Weft Ikat

The Weft technique is well established in South Sumatra and Bali.

In weft ikat it is the weaving or weft yarn that carries the dyed patterns. Therefore, the pattern only appears as the weaving proceeds. Weft ikats are much slower to weave than warp ikat because the weft yarns must be carefully adjusted after each passing of the shuttle to maintain the clarity of the design.

In Thailand, weavers make silk sarongs depicting birds and complex geometrical designs in seven color weft ikat.

As the weft is commonly a continuous strand, aberrations or variation in coloration are cumulative. Some weft ikat traditions incorporate this affect into their aesthetic. Patterns become transformed by the weaving process into irregular and erratic designs.

Double ikat

Double Ikat is a technique in which both warp and the weft are resist-dyed prior to weaving. Obviously it is the most difficult to make and the most expensive. Double ikat is only produced in three countries: India, Japan and Indonesia.

The village Bali Aga, Tenganan, East Bali stands out in South East Asia as the spiritual home of the complicated Double Ikat process – which is an unrivaled skill for producing the patience-testing style of Geringsing Double ikat. The word Gringsing – Gring derived from the word meaning ‘sick’ and – Sing meant “no”, therefore Gringsing means to avoid pain. Geringsing are treasured as they are purported to have magical powers.  Some of the Tenganan double ikat motifs are taken directly from the Indian patola tradition.

The double ikat made in Patan, Gujarat in India is the most complicated. Called “patola,” it is made using fine silk yarns and many colors. It may be patterned with a small motif that is repeated many times across the length of a six-meter sari. Sometimes the Patan double ikat is pictorial with no repeats across its length. That is, each small design element in each color was individually tied in the warp and weft yarns. It’s an extraordinary achievement in the textile arts.

These much sought after textiles were traded by the Dutch East Indies company for exclusive spice trading rights with the sultanates of Indonesia. In India double ikat is also woven in Telangana and called ‘Telia Rumaal’. In Japan, double ikat is woven in the Okinawa islands where it is called Kasuri.

How to differentiate the various types of ikat

One quick way to determine real from faux is to look at the reverse side. If the back is a solid color, it’s printed. Here are some tips for recognizing various ikat fabric.

At times, it’s hard to distinguish between a fabric with a printed or painted warp and one that is ikat. Each may have blurred edges in the patterns due to the shifting of warp threads during weaving. But in warp ikat, only the warp threads are wrapped to resist the dye and create the pattern. Bundles of threads are tied together and patterned exactly the same; these bundles may consist of two to twelve threads and the woven fabric would show these small groups of identical patterns. Another identifier—look at the length of the fabric. If the design runs parallel to the selvedge edge and the vertical lines are a little blurred due to the shifting of the warp yarns, it’s probably warp ikat.

In weft ikat, only the weft yarns are wrapped to resist the dye and form the pattern creating distinct horizontal lines. Weft ikat allows for more fluidity of design than warp ikat. During weaving, it is critical to position the weft yarn precisely in relation to the preceding weft shot and to all others that will follow. Any unplanned shifting will alter the design. You may notice small loops at the selvedge where the weaver shifted weft threads to create the design, as in the complex weft ikat pictured.

The process of creating double ikat is both complicated and time-consuming. The warp and weft yarns are wrapped and dyed to coincide; the resulting design has feathery edges on both sides of the intersection, as well as top and bottom. You can see this in the Japanese example. Undyed warp and weft yarns are counted, bundled, wrapped, and folded with precision in order to produce the pattern. Some patterns, such as the patola from India, require unwrapping and rewrapping between dyebaths.

Compound ikat combines warp- and weft-ikat methods in a way that forms independent, complementary patterns all in the same fabric. The Indonesians are well-known for producing exquisite compound ikats.

Though the resulting woven fabrics may appear artistic, the technique involves specific computations that focus on symmetry without undermining aesthetics. To draw a comparison, double ikat is akin to engineering where every inch is calculated and connected. The entire process is manual and very labor intensive – ‘handloom’ in every aspect
