The teeth do not get the same priority as the rest of the body but toothache can bring you down the moment you experience trouble with it. Like other parts of the body, you must therefore maintain and take care of it as long as you can so it lasts with you as you age. Brushing your teeth and going to the dentist regularly are two things that you can do, but there are also other alternative ideas.
Here are some ways to take care of your teeth:
One of the foods you can snack on for your dental health is nuts, as chewing helps stimulate saliva production. This is important, for it is saliva that aids in keeping the mouth clean. Other than that, foods low in carbohydrates won’t add to your risk for cavities. It’s also full of nutrition from protein, fiber to fat to keep you full so you won’t be reaching for sugary, high-carb snacks that can be detrimental to your teeth.
Brush gently and regularly.
As been said, brushing is crucial for dental health. But that is not all, as there is a proper way of brushing. Using too much force can destroy the tooth’s enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity and gum erosion. It’s also essential to choose the right brush. A soft bristle toothbrush is more gentle on the teeth compared with a hard bristle brush. Do not forget to change your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles start to look frayed.
There is no getting around it. Once you smoke, it affects your oral health as well. Not only detrimental to the body, someone who smokes will appear to have yellow teeth and a discolored tongue. Not only that, smoking can also slow the healing process of dental procedures and causes bad breath.
Avoid sugary and starchy foods.
Both sugary and starchy foods are some of the worst foods to eat for a healthy mouth. If you have a sweet tooth, consider lowering your intake of sugary treats and processed foods. Avoid processed foods as it contains added sugar and are often as bad as desserts. On the other hand, starchy foods like rice or pasta break down into simple sugars which acid-producing bacteria in your mouth feed off of. The acid produced by such bacteria can erode the enamel and cause cavities. Instead, reach more for fruits and vegetables rich in fiber. These foods nourish your body but also keep your teeth strong.
Use a mouthwash.
After brushing your teeth, a mouthwash is often optional but a great addition nevertheless. Mouthwash can remove plaque, and kill bacteria in your mouth while protecting your teeth. The proper way to use a mouthwash is to swish it in your mouth for at least 30 seconds and spit it out. Do not eat or drink for a minimum of 30 minutes so that the mouthwash will take its effect.
